Why I Don’t Do 5 Year Plans

Have you ever been asked…. “Where do you want to be in 5-10 years time?” in a job interview and felt completed stumped? Me too!

Here’s my take on this…If you love 5-10 year plans, you have one and it makes you feel good -  by all means carry on as you were :)

For the rest of us, it can feel like a frustrating process to try and figure this out.

I personally don’t believe in a 5-10 year plan. I’m also not interested in having one myself. I don’t teach people how to create them either.

In reality, there’s not much about life that’s predictable and certain. Our mind’s can try to offset that uncertainty with a 5-10 year plan.

The mind thinks if we have a plan, then somehow we’re more safe. But the truth is, you can be safe without a plan.

Safety is a feeling we can anchor into, no matter what’s going on in our lives and it’s absolutely possible to feel safe even if you don’t know what the future holds for you.

And anyway, how on earth could we know how things are going to look in 10 years time?

When I was 20 I thought I would be married and have all my kids by 25. I’m just getting started at 34 :)

We can get soooo busy trying to figure out the 5-10 year plan, that we forget to actually start living our life now.

or…

Because we’re so set in our mind about how things need to be, we close ourselves off from the deeply purposeful, fun, exhilarating opportunities that Life would prefer to lead us into.

What I’m far more interested in is…How do you want to feel in your life?

And….are you allowing yourself to feel that way right now?

It’s far more impactful to focus on the underlying essence, the energy or feeling you want your life to have.

For some it could be

“I want to feel joyful”

“I want to feel free”

“I want to feel creative”

“I want to feel adventurous”

Then let Life lead you.

The best things come to us in life, when we are open.

We stay open by focussing on the energy or essence that’s important to us, doing our best to feel and experience that now — and then whatever we’re supposed to be doing will come across our path - minus the stressful and constricting plan you feel pressured to live up to :)

Your job is to lead with the energy or essence of what you want. Be clear on that and start creating that for yourself now - why wait?
