How To Prepare Yourself For a Difficult or Courageous Conversation

How can you support yourself before a courageous or difficult conversation at work or in a relationship?

Mindfulness is a great tool for this because it fosters emotional regulation.

In other words, when we practice mindfulness we will feel more calm, grounded and composed.

When we feel this way, we are able to articulate our thoughts more clearly and advocate for ourselves with confidence, increasing the likelihood of achieving a favourable outcome.

When we are feeling grounded like this, it also prevents emotional reactions that could derail the conversation or obscure our messaging.

Practically a few things I’d recommend to do prior to the conversation would include:

▪️ Engaging in deep rhythmic breaths (in for 4 out for 6 is a good one)

▪️ Going for a short walk without your phone, use your senses and notice what’s around you, focus on your breath

▪️Close your eyes and visualise yourself succeeding in the discussion. Imagine yourself speaking confidently, articulately, and persuasively. Visualise a positive outcome and how you will feel when it's achieved.

▪️Using affirmations like “I’m prepared for this discussion”, “I’m deserving of this promotion”, “It’s safe for me to speak what’s true for me.” can also be helpful to boost confidence
